Relief Pub Management

Experienced management cover when your venue needs it.

From £175 per day

When a pub needs short-term management cover due to holiday, sickness, a vacancy or an unexpected absence, we can step in to provide experienced, hands-on management for the period required.

We work within the venue’s existing operation, taking responsibility for the agreed management duties and providing continuity until the usual management arrangements resume or another solution is in place.

What relief management provides

Relief management gives you an experienced manager who can step into your existing operation and take responsibility for the agreed management duties for the duration of the cover.

Continuity while you’re away

We work within your existing procedures and management structure rather than introducing unnecessary change during a short-term assignment.

This can include:

  • Following existing operating procedures

  • Maintaining established team routines

  • Working to agreed labour and staffing requirements

  • Completing required management checks

  • Escalating significant issues when necessary

  • Providing an appropriate handover at the end of the cover

On-site management

We provide a visible management presence within the venue, working alongside the existing team and taking responsibility for the day-to-day operation during the agreed period.

This can include:

  • Leading the team and managing service

  • Opening and closing responsibilities

  • Maintaining service and operating standards

  • Guest service and issue resolution

  • Cash and operational controls

  • Responding to day-to-day operational issues

The responsibilities we take on are agreed before the assignment begins, so you know exactly what will be covered while we're on site.

Relief management provides short-term continuity when your venue needs an experienced manager but the usual management arrangements are temporarily unavailable.

When relief management can help

Planned absence

Cover for holidays, training, scheduled leave or other planned periods when the usual manager will be unavailable.

Sickness & unexpected absence

Short-notice cover when sickness, emergency leave or another unexpected absence creates an immediate management gap.

Recruitment gaps

Temporary management cover while a permanent manager is being recruited, or during the period before their agreed start date.

Rota & short-term gaps

Cover for individual days, shifts or short periods where the existing team cannot provide the required management presence.

Need cover through a longer transition?

If your venue is between permanent managers, tenants or operators, our Holding Pub Management service may be more appropriate.

Before the assignment

Before arriving on site, we establish the practical information and access needed to step into the venue and provide effective management cover from the start.

Cover required

We confirm the dates and times of cover, the management responsibilities required and any specific priorities during the assignment.

Venue & team

We familiarise ourselves with the venue’s operation, team structure, trading hours and any important operational information we need to know.

Access & systems

We establish the access required for relevant systems, keys, alarms, cash controls and other management processes needed to carry out the assignment.

Key contacts

We agree who our nominated contact will be, how significant issues should be escalated and any reporting required during the cover.

Good preparation allows us to arrive ready to take responsibility, rather than spending the first part of the assignment finding out how the venue works.

During the assignment

While providing relief cover, we work as part of the existing operation, taking responsibility for the agreed management duties and keeping the venue running consistently throughout the assignment.

Management presence

We provide visible, hands-on management throughout the agreed cover period, taking responsibility for the venue and responding to issues as they arise.

Team leadership

We lead the team on shift, provide clear direction and support and ensure responsibilities are understood throughout the trading day.

Service & standards

We maintain the venue’s established service and operating standards, ensuring the guest experience and day-to-day operation remain consistent.

Operational control

We complete the agreed management routines and controls, oversee the areas within our responsibility and address or escalate issues where necessary.

Our role is to provide dependable management continuity, allowing the existing operation to continue without unnecessary disruption while the usual management is unavailable.

Handover

At the end of the relief assignment, we provide a clear handover so that responsibility can return smoothly to the usual manager or nominated contact.

Depending on the assignment, this can include:

  • A summary of the period covered

  • Any significant operational or staffing matters

  • Outstanding actions requiring follow-up

  • Relevant guest issues or incidents

  • Information relating to agreed management controls

  • Anything requiring the returning manager’s attention

Our aim is to leave the returning manager fully informed and able to resume responsibility without unnecessary disruption.
